I tell you, it was the swallow that set me off -
Swan-diving over the lane, air-fishing for bugs
Effortless, just beautiful!
After the hawk, tipping his tail, glided away to the right,
Mobbed by a frantic parent-bird,
Reckless in defence of her young.
"You see?" I said, as if
Talking to God, "This life
Is sweet, and dangerous -
And I love it! Every foolish, feckless,
Breath of it ..."
And I held my breath as if to test the length of it
And sighed, deeply, with something like
Ecstasy.
